Verona

When Verona woke and headed to the kitchen, it was early enough that she’d expected only to see Mama Wend. So, she stopped in surprise when she reached the threshold of the kitchen/dining area and found Logan cooking with both Bailey and Mama Wend sitting at the table with coffee in hand. Frowning, she sat in the seat next to Bailey and peered into his cup. Even though the coffee was a pale color, indicating it had almost as much milk as coffee, she still shook her head and looked up at him. “You actually like that stuff?”

He shrugged. “The flavor takes some getting used to, but I like how I feel after I drink it.”

Mama Wend hid a smile behind her cup as she took another sip.

“I don’t really get it, but I suppose many do, since most people tend to drink the stuff.”

He lifted a brow as he put down the cup. “Most of them?”

She nodded.

Leveling a glare at the mug as though it betrayed him, he pushed it away. Verona couldn’t help but roll her eyes. It wasn’t like he was going to catch human emotions by drinking their magic morning elixir. Like it would even hurt him to have a few emotions anyway. Bailey had been domineering in the ocean, but on land, he was quite boring. She didn’t understand why he’d changed so much. The thought of what he might have in his plans made her twitchy.

Logan set a plate in front of each of them and one at the empty spot across from Verona before sitting down in his own chair with a plate. On each plate was a mixture of eggs, potatoes, and ham in a scramble. After watching Mama Wend and Logan put ketchup on the concoction, she did the same before taking a savory bite. Then she gestured toward the plate he’d put at the empty spot. “Is Alex joining us this morning?”

At the same time as Logan nodded, the front screen door squealed his arrival. Benji jumped up, his nails clacking against the kitchen tiles as he scrambled to greet the newcomer. “Hey everyone! It’s just me!” Alex called in from the front of the house.

“Come on in! I made you a plate,” Logan said as he raised his voice to be heard from his seat in the kitchen.

A moment later, Alex came and took his place at the empty seat. He stuffed his face with two forkfuls before chewing and swallowing it down with a gulp of orange juice. Mama Wend laughed as she leaned back in her chair, cradling the cup of coffee to her chest. She’d eaten about half of what was on her plate. Since she’d left the hospital, she’d been eating a bit more than before, and Verona hadn’t seen her vomiting as much. Both were good signs. Even though she’d heard of cancer from watching her TV shows, she wasn’t sure if Mama Wend was in the category of dying from it or in remission.
